Rules
The game starts in the summer of 2008. Please make sure your character's age is correct for the setting of this game. To give you an idea of relative ages, Harry turns 28 July 31.
All new players are allowed only two characters to start off with, but others may be applied for once the player has proven his/her activity and willingness to plot. There is no limit on characters per player, but it will be very difficult to persuade the mods to let you take on more than four. No one will be allowed to play two or more characters who are closely related or involved unless you can convince us as to why this is a good idea. Anyone found to be playing almost solely with himself or herself will be booted. The lists of free and taken characters as well as PBs can be found here. We are not restricting who may be used for PBs except that we ask that the person be over 18 if they are engaging in adult activities and appropriate for your character.
This game will most likely contain things of an adult or otherwise age- sensitive material. For this reason, all players must be over the age of 18 and legally allowed to view such content in their location regardless of whether or not they plan on actually doing so.
This game is both het and slash friendly, but it is first and foremost a plot-driven game. Any character who does nothing but shag for a month will be booted.
Along those same lines, we understand that playing out relationships between characters is part of the joy of role-playing. However, we expect all relationships to be at least somewhat realistic.
We require players to have some show of activity at least once a month. This can be a long journal post or a log, but it must be IC and it must have some substance to it - shagging alone does not count. Actively commenting on the journals (not just your own) can count for activity as well. This does not mean you can leave an "IAWTC" on a few threads and expect to be good (also, please see below for our stance on chatspeak.)
There are three communities:
coa,
coa_ooc, and
coa_comm. The first is for logs involving more than one character (rps), the second for out of character posts (such as announcements of joining, plot discussions, mod posts, getting-to-know-you posts for both muns and characters... you get the idea.) The third is for owls, notes, and any other form of non-journal and non-face-to-face communication. All three have moderated membership to protect any information in the mun/charrie chart, for example.
All posts whose content is R or NC-17 require posted ratings and warnings. All NC-17 material must be under a cut. If a rating is undetermined at the time of posting, please note this fact and update the rating as soon as it has been determined. We require that no posts be friends locked so that they may be shared with potential players and friends. This means friends-locking is okay on posts to
coa_ooc but not for posts to
coa,
coa_comm, or any character journals. All notices of player absences must (a) be cleared ahead of time with the mods and (b) stated to the OOC journal. Information passed to the mods along the grapevine will be ignored. The exception to this is, of course, emergencies, but OOC posts made to character journals alone will always be ignored.
Chatspeak is not allowed except in silly comments and posts on the OOC community. Its appearance in game is grounds for dismissal.
Your character's journal is a physical object he or she has been given to facilitate communication between the Children of Azkaban and the community they are being integrated into. The journals may be written in or set to record audio. The default (i.e. unless otherwise indicated) is writing, but they may change back and forth between the two during the course of comment threads, if it is indicated that they are doing so. Physical interactions are not allowed in the journals unless they are purely auditory in nature. "Recording" sex noises is not allowed.
Logs are expected to be written out in complete sentences with proper grammar and spelling. They should be posted in the format:
Who: (characters involved)
When: (date or link to thread/journal post the log immediately follows)
Where: (location)
Rating: (include any specific warnings, such as slash, incest, bdsm, etc.)
Please keep who you are playing in mind when you set the location for your logs. We are not banning any particular locations, but we reserve the right to question what we consider to be any particularly strange choices, such as Draco and Narcissa meeting for coffee at Starbucks.
Any rping which takes place over IM is not considered to be in game unless it is posted as a log in which case it is subject to the same constraints as any other log. Lazy threading (i.e. one character posting to the main community for a specific other to come along and play with them without the format or any sort of setup at all) is not allowed.
If your character is an aspiring musician and you wish to use a real artist's material, you must (a) run the idea by the mods first with a good explanation of why you have selected that artist, (b) convince us that a musician has a place in this game, and (c) stick to only your PB's material.
This is a dark, plot-driven game and as such we fully expect a veritable wealth of interesting character interactions, no few of which will be between characters who absolutely hate one another. Do not let this spill over into out of character drama or all participants will be given one warning and banned if they do not heed it. Similarly, we expect everyone here to act like adults and not let any out of character relationships (be they positive or negative) dictate character actions. Anyone who repeatedly demonstrates an inability to understand the difference between in character and out of character will be ejected from the game. This includes the previously mentioned offenses as well as god-moding and metagaming. If you do not know what these terms mean, look them up. Should OOC problems arise, please let us know immediately. Moderators are here to moderate and we will do so without breaking any confidences.
We encourage players to come up with many varied and complex plots, but we ask that any major ones be run by us first. This includes your character having offspring.
Strong knowledge of the Potterverse canon is not required for this game, but we would like our players to have some basic familiarity with the wizarding world. Canon is considered to be what's in game followed by Ms Rowling's material: books one through seven but not the epilogue with the movies being subservient to the books.
To prove that you have read and understand the rules, your application comment should have the subject line in the format: "Application: (character name). Rules read and accepted." Any application received without this will be denied with instructions to read the rules.
Your mods are Kristin (?) and Tenitia (?). We reserve the right to make changes to these rules at any point, but we promise to inform the players of anything major.
Basically, all of the above can be summed up with these four words: Don't Be Stupid. Seriously. Or, in the words of our other mod: "No Asshattery!"
